Xanax overdose

Do you have any experience on Xanax overdose symptoms? Alprazolam is said to be a safe drug, but my mother could not wake up after a 3 pill Xanax dose -taken by mistake. Doctor said it was alprazolam. Does anybody have any information about how to deal with Xanax overdose in an emergency at home?? Thanks!

Jonathan

3 pill overdose? I think the largest dosage of Xanax given in pill form is 2 mg, so it really shouldn't be that troublesome to you. Your mother should be OK if not quite drowsy for a day or 2 after this. Make sure she doesn't drive or operate any potentially dangerous machinery for at least 3 days though, just to be sure. Also would be worth it to keep an eye on her. Xanax is not necessarily the best insomnia cure, as the the other Insomnia Cures blog notes. There are better meds available to your Mom, such as Ambien or Lunesta. I will suggest that your Mom consider tapering off of Xanax, unless of course she is prone to severe anxiety. It is a powerfully addicting substance, and very hard to stop taking all at once. Be careful if this overdose has caused her to stop taking the pills all together (cold turkey) because the withdrawal can be severe. It is best if one tapers the dosage from this drug - with a doctor's supervision. I hope your Mom is fine. After a few days of serious sleep she should be back to normal.

Hello! If she couldn't wake up just once, it is obvious it is xanax. Sometimes older people have that problem, others just have the opposite effect and can't get asleep. However, xanax is safe in overdose, check how many pills she took. You should call an ambulance if she breathes less than 6 times a minute. No matter what can you do. If she is sleeping well, you should leave her till she recovers.
