Sleep disorders
In general, for considering a sleep disorder as insomnia it is absolutely necessary to know how many hours that person actually sleeps and compare it with the average. But anyway, a shortened length of sleep is a disorder that current medical practice comes along frequently. However, the investigations have to continue so that these patients could have an accurate treatment.
A usual warning about this subject is not to consume medication to treat insomnia without the correct prescriptions of a professional.
I have been taking the generic of xanax for a few years to alleviate the anxiety I get before I go to bed as I have had sleep problems for 29 years (I believe it's the .5 dosage--oval, peach color). In the last few months I have been getting up from 2am to 4am and not able to get back to sleep. My gynecologist suggested I take a Lunesta (2mg) with the xanax to keep me asleep through the night. It worked for a while but now I am getting up at 2am again and can't get back to sleep. WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST?
Throughout the years I have tried progressive relaxation, meditation, bio-feedback, guided imagery and. several other sleep medications (Sonata--didn't work; Ambien--left me too drowsy; and a few others), In addition, I have tried acupuncture and hypnosis but they didn't help. I also tried brain wave therapy to no avail.
I am so thoroughly frustrated and feel panic when I get up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. I know how depressed and ineffective I will be the next day.
